New Orleans Music Education Collaborative Summer 2024 Programs

The mission of NOMEC is to support, strengthen, promote and advocate for quality and equitable music education in our schools and music education organizations.

The following programs are being offered this summer by members of NOMEC:

  • Armstrong Jazz Camp: June 24-July 12 (9-3pm) https://louisarmstrongjazzcamp.com/
    • The Armstrong camp is a pre-eminent three-week summer music intensive for youngsters 10 – 21 years old. Instructions are provided in brass, woodwinds, electric & acoustic bass, strings, piano, drums, percussions, guitar, strings, vocals, swing & second-line dance, music theory, hip hop, and music performance. The program is designed for youngsters serious about furthering their musical education and interested in learning more about jazz as an art form. Students from all economic backgrounds are accepted.
  • Heritage School of Music: June 4-28th (Tues/Thurs) (5-7pm) https://www.jazzandheritage.org/summer-audition-request/
    • The Heritage School of Music offers free music classes to students aged 8-18. We teach every and any instrument and every ability level from absolute beginner to advanced. The Heritage School’s faculty is composed of professional working musicians and the curriculum ranges from teaching fundamentals to advanced Improvisation. Classes offered are: Studio (Woodwind, Brass, Strings, Guitar, Piano, Voice, Drums), Music Theory, Combo (ensemble), choir, and music fundamentals. The Heritage School focuses heavily on teaching New Orleans music and songs of New Orleans composers from Louis Armstrong to Current New Orleans artists.
  • Second Line Arts Collective: June 3-14th (9-4pm) https://www.secondlinearts.org/summer
    • Welcome to the Sanaa Music Workshop, a transformative program by the Second Line Arts Collective. We’re here to empower young artists, aged 14-23, by offering a blend of comprehensive business education and traditional music classes.
  • Loyola Summer Jazz Camp: June 9-13, 2024 http://cmm.loyno.edu/music/jazz-camp
    • Four days of intensive jazz improvisation experience in a small group setting taught by Loyola University New Orleans Jazz Faculty. Musicians will learn improvisation and ensemble performance in a small group setting. We accept students with one year of experience and up. You must be 14 years old to stay in the dorms.
  • Beyond the Stage Session 1: June 10-July 5 & Session 2: July 8-August 2 https://www.beyondthestagellc.com/campart
    • Explore the creative arts and discover your voice through visual arts, theater, music, dance and creative writing. CAMP ART, curated by Beyond The Stage, is a place where children can explore, imagine and create. Campers are instructed and challenged to engage in higher thought and express themselves through each art medium daily by industry professionals. Every Friday is FUN with field trips to every child’s favorite play spaces. CAMP ART offers two 4-wk sessions June 10th – July 5th and July 8th – August 2nd and offers competitive summer camp rates. Sibling discounts and before/after care services are available.

  • Make Music NOLA  – June 10-28 (4:30-6:30pm) https://www.makemusicnola.org/register
    • Make Music NOLA, offering free string instrumental music education, has a few openings for a special summer camp “Harmony and Health”. Classes begin at 4:30 until 6:30 pm Monday thru Friday from June 10th and go on until June 28th. On June 28th we will have a performance to show off our new skills. It will be first come, first serve. Once we reach the maximum number of students, you will be placed on a waiting list in case of any cancellations.
  • Community Music Center of New Orleans – last 2 weeks of July https://www.cmcno.org/
    • We’re excited about the Summer Music Camp at the Community Music Center of New Orleans (CMCNO)! If you know any youth with a passion for music and a desire to develop their talent, CMCNO Summer Music Camp is the place for them. At CMCNO, we believe in connecting at-risk youth with master musicians to promote growth through performance and education. In the fall and spring, we operate an after-school program that focuses on teaching the fundamentals of instrumental music and music theory.
